There are many ways to change codes for most 3-button commercial garage door openers. This guide will cover a few possibilities so you can get the most out of your remote control.
Commercial garage door openers are only designed to do one thing-open your garage door-so there is not much else to them. These commercial garage door openers usually work flawlessly and do not need much attention or maintenance. However, when they break down, they can be a real pain to fix on your own and cost a lot of money if you end up needing a repair company. If you want to keep your opener in good shape and prevent any mechanical or electrical issues from occurring in the future, take these steps:
If you have a garage door that has a 3 button commercial opener, it is possible to lock the door by holding the middle “down” button for 2 seconds and then pressing the left and right buttons simultaneously. This method should work with any of the commercial models on the market.
If you have been given another code for your unit and want to know how to change the codes for your commercial garage door opener, or if it has been broken and your previous code is invalid, you may want to try the following methods:
Method #1: Use an old 3 button remote
Most remotes with two buttons should work, but if your unit is older than the last one you owned or has changed over time, those may not be interchangeable. Check the bottom side while holding it up to see if there is an illustration of how to use a keypad.
- If your remote has a security keypad, you must remove it first. Most 3 button remotes will have a button or two at the top of the control panel that allows you to select the “lock” option if that is what you need, otherwise scroll through all of the buttons until you find one marked “enter”.
- Press down on it once and the unit should respond by opening the door with either an audible chime or flashing red light telling you that it thinks there is a code set.
- If you are asked for a code, enter your original one followed by 0000 (that’s four zeros. Nothing else, or you will get an error that the code is invalid, and your unit will not respond.)
- After you have entered the correct code, it may be set to lock automatically, which means that pressing both buttons once again will lock the door and leave it there until you have used another code to unlock it.
- Alternatively, if you have a number pad, use your new code instead of 0000. You can always reset to 0000 if this does not work, either.
- Press the “enter” button twice so it can be sure that there is no code already set, and then press both buttons simultaneously to shut it off.
- This will now reset your unit to the new code you have entered, and if this does not work, then go ahead and try one of the other methods outlined here.
Method #2: Use a screwdriver or pen
If you have a 3 button remote control for a commercial garage door opener, there may be no way to change the code unless you can find an old remote that works with yours or adjust it manually. You may need to check your model number or look at the label in your unit for this, but if you find one that works for your team, then use it to change the code.
- Again, you will need to take off the cover on the side of it where you have buttons and sort of twist it down until you can remove the cover altogether. It is an old-fashioned button style so be careful not to damage anything while you are doing this.
- Depending on your remotes’ direction, you can either take off the top button (if you have a 2 button unit) or the bottom button (if you have a 3 button unit) and do the same with that.
- Keep going until all of your remotes are the same and then remove them to place them in a safe place so they can stay working when you need them again.
- If your remote is large enough, it will be easier to find a screwdriver or pen if it has been lost or broken. Just keep an eye out as they may also be found in some units.
- Either pry out the button or buttons that you need to get to and remove them, or if you have a 2 button remote, remove all of the buttons to switch out and set up your new one.
- You will then have to go back and remove the other buttons on the other remotes, so they are all equal, so there is no confusion. Remove them by squeezing the sides until you can slide them off without damaging anything else on your remote control panel.
- From here, just put everything back together and repeat method 1, except this time, though, it is easier since you have already removed the covers in step #1 above.
Method #3: Use a hard reset
If you cannot find your old remote or do not have another one, you can also try to hard reset your door remote control. This is the last resort option, and it may not work unless the code is simple, but it is worth trying before taking off any parts of your commercial garage door opener.
- Lift up the opener unit with one hand and use the other to have it stand there while you push both buttons or dials. This will cause the unit to think that it has been activated so when you release it, it will unlock by opening up. Be careful, though, because it will start to close just as fast as it was opened, so try to stop it before that happens.
- Press both buttons or dials again after a few seconds and try to put your new code in. If this does not work, try harder and reset until the door remote control finally accepts your unique code.
- Have someone inside the garage so they can see what you are doing outside of the garage in case things get stuck halfway down or up again.
You may want to consider replacing the remote if you can find one that works for your unit, but this will depend on your door opener and if you can get it figured out. This mod is the last resort so keep that in mind.
Troubleshoot your garage door opener when it is broken or has not been used for a long time.
If your commercial garage door opener is broken or stopped working, there are things you can do to try and fix it before calling an expert. First, check to see if there is any debris obstructing the opening at all. You should also check the safety sensors and ensure they have not been removed or tampered with. Next, check the wiring or battery connections in the receiver, to see if there is any corrosion. If anything looks out of place, examine it closely and clean it off if possible. If none of these things help solve your problem, you will need to call a professional for assistance.
If you try any of these methods to repair or adjust the garage door remote control, carefully inspect it afterward to ensure no parts are damaged. If any parts have been damaged during their use, then it may be time for you to call for a professional garage door repair technician after.
Conclusion
If there is no keypad or you do not want to use a key in your garage door remote, this is an excellent way to ensure that someone doesn’t enter your home or business without permission by changing the code on your existing opener and causing damage or stealing items in your garage.
